New Guidelines for the Trade of Reptiles and Amphibians at Our Terrarium Fairs from 2025

In the interest of animal welfare, new trade guidelines have been introduced for certain breeding forms of reptiles and amphibians.

These measures aim to regulate the trade in animals that may have health problems due to their genetic characteristics. Affected breeding forms The new regulations concern various breeding lines that are known or proven to be associated with increased health risks or limitations in quality of life. Examples of this are:

Certain color morphs in leopard geckos that are associated with an increased risk of skin diseases or neurological disorders. For example:

  • Lemonfrost and Enigma color forms.
  • Specific breeding lines in ball pythons that may exhibit balance disorders (wobbling). For example: Spider.
  • Bearded dragon variants with altered skin texture that can lead to problems with thermoregulation and increased susceptibility to injury. For example: scaleless animals.
  • Albino forms of diurnal lizards and turtles, which have increased light sensitivity due to the lack of melanin.

    Goal of the measures:
To protect the welfare of the animals
To raise awareness among breeders and traders about the health effects of certain breeding forms
To prevent buyers from inadvertently acquiring animals with potential health problems.
It is important to emphasize that these measures do not concern all breeding forms, but specifically those for which scientific.

It is important to emphasize that these measures do not affect all breeds, but specifically those for which there is scientifically proven evidence of an increased risk of health impairments.
